Glenn Innes

Glenn Innes was a pretty little town and deserved more than the 18 hours we had to spend there. This small community has been around since the 1840s and boast of its Celtic Heritage. They are so proud of this that in 1988 they constructed an area of standing rocks reminiscent of those you would see in there homeland. It’s a beautiful park with the standing stones, picnic areas, exercise tracks and a wallaby that came hopping through just as we were leaving. Of course the camera was away but I will keep that memory of my first hopping wallaby for a lifetime!

We had dinner at the service club in town. People were playing slots, poker, inside lawn bowling, pool on a very large table, and socializing with friends. Kip and Josh enjoyed a steak sandwich complete with slices of beets. Interesting. Josh and I played the slots; I lost but Josh won back my money so we were even steven.

Breakfast was fun at the local bakery with sausage rolls and brekkie pies. The brekkie pies were actual pies…small ones with ground sausage surrounding an egg with maybe cheese on top. Yummy but full of calories and no way to work it off.

Before leaving we had a bit of fun trying our hand at fossicking for sapphires. After a brief lesson we gave it a shot and found lots of pretty stones (not gemstones!) and maybe several sapphires. The clock was ticking and with the roads here we felt we needed to get moving to our next stop in the middle of Lamington National Park.
